Compare to Insurance Pricing.
Traditional insurance is designed for catastrophic risk, yet it forces you to use it for primary care. That creates a cost wedge where you pay premiums and cash prices for routine medicine until a massive deductible is met. DPC + health share separates the two functions: you pay a fair price for unlimited primary care, and you keep a catastrophic backstop for the rare hospital event.
Scenario 1: Healthy Year (No major illness, one urgent care visit, routine labs)
ACA Bronze $7,800 premiums + $800 in cash-pay labs/visits (subject to deductible) = $8,600
ACA Gold $13,200 premiums + $400 in copays = $13,600
DPC + Health Share$7,800 combined + $0 for primary care visits/labs = ~$7,800
Result: DPC + health share is cost-competitive with Bronze and thousands less than Gold—but with infinitely better access.
Scenario 2: Moderate Event (ER visit for laceration, imaging, follow-up)
ACA Bronze$7,800 premiums + $5,000 toward deductible = ~$12,800
ACA Gold$13,200 premiums + $2,000 deductible hit + copays = ~$15,500
DPC + Health Share$7,800 combined + $1,500 IUA (Sedera-style per incident) + DPC handles all follow-up at $0 = ~$9,300
Result: The IUA functions like a deductible but is often lower, and your follow-up care is already paid for by the DPC membership.
Scenario 3: Major Event (Surgery, hospitalization)
ACA Bronze$7,800 premiums + $9,450 OOP max = ~$17,250
ACA Gold$13,200 premiums + $5,000 cost-sharing = $18,200
DPC + Health Share$7,800 combined + typically $2,500–$5,000 in unshareable/IUA costs per incident = ~$10,300–$12,800
Result: Health shares often have lower exposure per incident than ACA OOP maximums, though they lack the regulatory guarantees of insurance (see caveats below).
